A Look At The IPhone 4
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you can’t have missed the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 4. With the promise of the kind of features that customers have been demanding, a new look, and better technology, Apple have made the familiar claim that this is the best iPhone yet. So how does the iPhone 4 stack up against your old iPhone, and the other smartphones out there?
Whereas you’d be hard pushed to tell a 3G and a 3GS apart, the iPhone 4 has a completely new look. It’s flatter, thinner, and even die-hard 3GS fans would probably admit that it has a much more stylish, high-end look to it. But its looks are just the start, and the appearance of an extra camera on the front, and an LED flash for the main camera, give you an idea of the extra features that have been crammed into this smaller, better-looking iPhone.
Switch the iPhone 4 on and you can’t help but notice the impressive new screen. Thanks to twice as many pixels as before, icons, photos, email text and webpages appear much clearer. The improvement in the display isn’t just limited to still images either. High resolution videos look much better, and the screen easily copes with bright sunlight and being viewed form different angles.
One of the criticisms of previous iPhones, has always been the camera. While fans have admired the look and functionality of the 3G and 3GS, many felt let down by a 3 megapixel camera and no flash. The iPhone 4 fixes that, and while the megapixels have only gone up to 5, the advancements in the software and light sensing technology mean that photos and video on the new iPhone look as good as those from some of the best camera phones on the market. The addition of a second camera for Apple’s ‘Facetime” video calling, and a flash to help in low-light conditions, help to boost the iPhone 4′s camera credentials.
You also get a new Operating System with the iPhone 4, iOS4, which has some impressive new features compared to the old 3GS operating system. For a start, the capacity of your homescreens is increased with the addition of folders for all the similar icons you want to keep together. But probably the biggest attraction of iOS4 is the true multitasking it offers. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, you can now keep several apps open at the same time, and quickly and easily switch between them.
Those who thought the 3GS was good will love the new look and greater functionality offered by the iPhone 4. Would be Apple converts who might still be on the fence should get down and join the queue to get one. Apple has improved what many thought was already the best smartphone in the world, and is sure to win over a lot of new fans with its great looks, class-leading display and usability.
